When the county retires Birch Lake's bookmobile, ten-year-old Keely finds six forgotten request cards hidden in its last drawer. One belongs to a woman recovering alone. One belongs to a girl who wants to read with her grandmother. The final card is for a man at the end of a road, just as winter starts to close northern Minnesota down.
Keely knows the route by its snowbanks, porch lights, and the people who wait for exact books. She also knows that if she asks for help, her promise to her late mother might no longer feel like hers. With her practical older brother Milo beside a battered blue library cart, Keely races weather, paperwork, and a county pickup deadline to finish the last deliveries.
But a route is more than miles on a spreadsheet. It is a web of names, records, and people willing to carry one piece. As the storm tightens, Keely must decide whether to protect the promise alone or bring it into the open before the cart rolls away for good.

By three o'clock, Birch Lake School's parking lot held one retired bookmobile, two orange county cones, and a wind that made every loose thing look guilty.
Keely stood inside the bookmobile with an armful of returns. The shelves had been cleared until they looked like ribs. She set the books in the plastic bin Grandma June had labeled in her neat nurse handwriting: RETURN TO MAIN BRANCH.
"Careful with that one," Grandma called from the steps. "It has a torn cover."
