Five weeks before a make-or-break grant audition, Cleveland voice teacher Mara Kline inherits the community choir that once made her career possible. The score left by her dead mentor contains a missing movement and an erased name.

As rehearsals tighten, Mara's former protege Tessa Ilyanova challenges every shortcut Mara uses to keep the ensemble together. Choir members are balancing night shifts, buses, dialysis rides, and unpaid labor. Then former bass Elias Varga returns with proof that the choir's celebrated music was built on work he was never credited for.

With funders demanding an uplifting, manageable story, Mara must choose between protecting the grant, preserving her own authority, and giving the truth room to be heard. Set in Cleveland's church basements, union halls, and precarious arts spaces, A Chorus for Late Arrivals is an adult novel about artistic ownership, public repair, and the difficult music of being answerable to one another.

The trunk had belonged to Edwin Sloan, which was reason enough for Mara Kline to dislike it.

It sat on a folding table in Nadia Bell's office, its brass corners greened with age, its lid open like a mouth that had already said too much. Outside the room, adults moved through the arts center with coats damp from lake rain. A woman from literacy class was sounding out words beside a poster for a salsa lesson. Someone dragged a cart of donated books down the hall.
