A Pocketful of Thunder
Omar is the kind of kid who keeps his homework dry, his library books in order, and his temper locked up tight
Omar is the kind of kid who keeps his homework dry, his library books in order, and his temper locked up tight. Then his sister loses his favorite pencil, and a tiny blue thundercloud appears in his backpack.
Every time Omar swallows what he really wants to say, the cloud grows. Soon it is dripping on library books, crackling through school hallways, and rumbling its way toward the biggest night of the year: the talent show. Hiding it only makes the storm worse.
With his blunt older sister, his joke-making best friend, and a sharp-eyed classmate, Omar has to find out where the water can go before it floods the gym. But first he must face the harder problem: telling the truth about his anger, even when it feels risky. A warm, funny magical school story about repair, courage, and making room for every kind of weather.

Omar had written calendar three times already when his backpack gave a tiny cough.
He stopped with his pencil lifted above the spelling-test paper. Around him, pencils scratched. Ms. Dorsey paced between desks in soft shoes that made no sound on the rug. Omar's pencil did not make much sound either. He pressed lightly so he would not snap its point.
It was his good pencil. Or it had been.
