After flood damage forces eleven-year-old Mara onto her aunt's crowded houseboat, she needs one thing almost as badly as dry socks: a quiet place to finish homework. So she pulls a bent folding table onto the dock, finds a few pencils, and starts a club for kids who need help.
Soon the Floating Homework Club has schedules, library backup, and students who count on it. Then every family receives a seven-day relocation notice. As the dock's future hangs in balance, Mara's attendance sheets and repair notes begin to matter far beyond school. But the papers also lead her to a secret agreement tied to her father's debt and Aunt Lila's fear.
Set along the Mississippi near St. Louis, this warm, fast-moving story follows a practical girl who learns that loyalty is not keeping quiet. Sometimes it is helping people tell the truth, then building something strong enough to hold them together.

The first thing Mara learned about living on a boat was that every noise had a job.
The water slapped the hull because it had nowhere else to go. The refrigerator clicked because Aunt Lila had plugged it into shore power with a cable as thick as Mara's wrist. Somebody on the next boat dropped a wrench, and the dock carried the clang through Mara's pillow like it was trying to wake her up for school.
Her old bedroom had been narrow, but it had a door. This one had a curtain printed with yellow lemons. Behind it stood the dinette table, folded down into a bed. Her backpack sat under her feet. Her damp math book lay on top of it with its pages puffed like it had swallowed a sponge.
