This book sells two things at once: adult romance and workplace pressure. Love does not float above system. Love lives inside it. The heroine is not a dreamy believer waiting to be saved. She is a fire-safety inspector, 42, competent, formal under stress, and trained to trust evidence before feeling. Romance works because lover is not rescue fantasy either. He is former partner, building manager, and son of property owner. He knows her too well to flatter her. She knows enough about code, buildings, and people to see his defenses before he opens mouth.

Commercial lane: adult fiction with book-club appeal, romance readers who want consequence, and upmarket readers who want social world and moral pressure. Story must feel readable on first page, but layered enough for discussion. No thriller clutter. No conspiracy maze. No missing-person engine. No survival odyssey. No public-exposure spectacle. Central engine is relationship under institutional pressure.

The snow had turned gray where the fire engines had ground it into the curb.

Mara parked behind the ladder truck and sat for one breath with both hands on the wheel. The mill rose above the flashing lights in old red brick, its upper windows dark except for a scatter of yellow squares. Someone had hung cheap wreaths in the lobby windows. One had slipped sideways on its wire.

Tom O'Brien knocked on her passenger window. He had his helmet tucked under one arm.
