When fifteen-year-old Suri Serrano opens an impossible door inside a dry municipal tank, she finds a storm valley where rain is stored before it ever reaches her drought-struck New Mexico town. On the other side waits Tomas, a guardian trainee who wants the door shut, and a court that says Suri has inherited a dangerous right to command the weather.
The offer is simple: wear the crown, send rain home, and surrender one cherished memory every year. But Suri has already lost enough. As a private water contract tightens around town and old acequia routes begin to fail, she follows the maintenance clues left by her grandmother, a woman the guardians call a traitor.
With her best friend Mina, Tomas, and a network of people who know what water means, Suri must decide whether relief is worth becoming another locked gate. The storm is coming. So is the price of letting someone else control it.

By nine in the morning, the town had already used its good water.
The sign at the kitchen sink said TWO MINUTES in my mother's blocky handwriting. I got one hand wet, shut off the tap, soaped, then rinsed fast. The pipes knocked like they were mad at me. Outside, the cottonwood behind our trailer held its leaves flat and dusty. Even shade looked thirsty.
"Tank job after school?" Mamá asked, packing her lunch.
