When a fire inspector finds a room missing from the plans, Lucia Torres knows the danger is bigger than one citation. As superintendent of a battered Chicago apartment building, she has survived by fixing leaks quietly, keeping keys close, and asking as few questions as possible about who needs a place to sleep.

A demolition notice turns that habit against her. Behind sealed lockers and old service doors, Throop House holds a fragile network of pantry shelves, medicine, night watches, and people with nowhere safer to go. Lucia's daughter Elena, a city plan-review inspector, is pulled into the case just as a redevelopment firm begins turning every repair delay into pressure.

To keep the building from being emptied room by room, Lucia must trade secrecy for evidence and convince residents to choose what can be seen. In a winter of frozen pipes, contested records, and open doors, survival will depend on whether a house can become proof of the lives it holds.

At five-thirty, Lucia Torres carried a flashlight, a crescent wrench, and a ring of keys that pulled at the belt loop of her jeans. The boiler room smelled of wet iron and old dust. Heat came up through the pipes in knocks and shudders, like somebody trapped below the concrete was asking to be let out.

She put her palm on the north riser. Warm enough.

Upstairs, Mrs. Dombrowski was already waiting in the second-floor hall with her robe pulled tight and a thermometer cupped in both hands.
