Terms of the Second Life

After her aunt dies, sixteen-year-old Jo Alvarez has ten days to prove that the Providence apartment she share

After her aunt dies, sixteen-year-old Jo Alvarez has ten days to prove that the Providence apartment she shares with her thirteen-year-old cousin is more than a temporary arrangement. Forms, home visits, and a possible placement with a relative in Fall River turn every grocery receipt and bus ride into evidence.

Jo is used to carrying the practical parts of life without complaint: work shifts, school calls, medicine, dinner. But Mina is tired of being protected by silence, and the more Jo tries to manage the crisis alone, the less safe their home feels. With help from a youth-court clinic, a skeptical caseworker, and people Jo never expected to rely on, she has to build a plan that includes more than her own stubbornness.

Set in a humid Providence summer, Terms of the Second Life is a contemporary YA story about grief, family pressure, and the difficult work of letting other people help before the people you love are asked to leave.

The word temporary was printed in a blue box at the top of the form, like somebody had stamped it on a carton of bruised peaches.

Ms. Nguyen held the packet against her clipboard while the hallway fan pushed hot air past us. She wore a navy blouse with one damp spot at the collar and looked like she had already apologized to three families that morning.

"I know this is a lot," she said.
