A Good Name in Winter
A sealed coffin should not be this light. When undertaker Elias Ward weighs it, he knows the body inside cannot be Anton Varga, the miner named on the brass plate.
In Red Ash, a company-controlled Colorado coal town in 1911, Elias has built his livelihood on discretion and a hard-won good name. His quiet inquiry through burial ledgers, hospital effects, casket invoices, and thawing graves draws him toward Mabel Kincaid, a strategic widow holding dangerous pages from her husband's ventilation notebook. Together they uncover a physician's system for disguising mine deaths by moving names, bodies, and payments where frightened families cannot challenge them.
Exposing the truth could cost Elias his cemetery post, his mortuary, and the respectability that has kept him independent. Silence would leave immigrant families mourning strangers while the real dead vanish into company paperwork. Intimate historical suspense with a restrained romantic current, A Good Name in Winter follows two compromised people through wet soil, locked records, and choices that offer no clean hands. When a public funeral crosses unstable ground, Elias must decide whether to protect his name or open the graves before the town can close ranks.

The frost had got into the handles.
Elias Ward knew it before Ilya said anything. The iron rings bit through his gloves, cold enough to make his fingers close around them badly. They stood at either end of the walnut coffin in the receiving room beneath Ward Mortuary, with the lamp smoking above them and the smell of carbolic soap rising from the drain.
"Lift on three," Ilya said.
