The Library Card Index

By Angela Lopez· [email protected]

Odelia Finch has spent thirty years making the library feel safe, useful, and boring. Then regular patrons begin arriving with fines for books they never borrowed. The false charges do more than block renewals: they cut people off from a county benefits partnership housed inside the library system.

Odelia knows these patrons. They return books on time. They bring grandchildren to research tables. They attend tenant meetings at the east branch, where residents are trying to hold landlords accountable. When barcode scans, printer queues, and Wi-Fi logs reveal a pattern, Odelia discovers that the library database is being used to make organizers look unreliable before a funding vote.

With her son’s county campaign caught in the same donor network and her own job on the line, Odelia must decide whether to keep solving problems quietly or put the evidence where no one can erase it: a televised library-board meeting.

A grounded contemporary mystery thriller about public records, civic pressure, and the cost of refusing to look away.

READ A LITTLE

A short preview from The Library Card Index.

Read a little

Rain ticked against the tall front windows of Central Branch and ran in silver threads past the poster for free tax help. Odelia Finch stood at the circulation desk with a pencil tucked behind one ear, separating the day's returned books into small, sensible piles. Juvenile. Large print. Holds. The work made a shape out of the morning.

Evelyn Baines approached with a canvas tote pressed to her side. Her yellow raincoat was beaded dark at the shoulders. Two library books rested in the crook of her arm, one on Appalachian wildflowers and one on Harriet Tubman, both carrying the worn look of books that had been read at a kitchen table.

"Morning, Mrs. Baines."
