Yvette Halloway teaches adults who come to class after work, after daycare pickup, and after long rides across Fresno. Her Room 214 is one place where a difficult day can still lead somewhere.
Then Lucinda Rios is locked out. The attendance system says she was present in two rooms at once, even though Yvette watched her sign in and take her usual seat by the window. When the same errors begin landing on students who need translation, flexible schedules, or help navigating school forms, Yvette stops treating the problem as a glitch.

One Seat Missing
Monday, August 5, began with the ordinary preparation of Room 214. Yvette Halloway straightened vocabulary packets, tested the dry-erase marker, and placed the paper sign-in sheet on the corner of her desk. A faint crease crossed the first page where someone had leaned too hard the week before.
She liked that kind of evidence. It had no interest in looking polished. It recorded pressure without argument.
