As Evaristo and his niece Tia trace altered phone numbers, delivery logs, and a point-of-sale maintenance file, they uncover a debt batch routed through the wholesaler that controls their shelves. The false accounts cluster around tenant organizers and storefronts targeted by the same property investor.

The first complaint came with the morning coffee rush, when the bell above Lane's Market had already rung so many times that its thin metal sound seemed lodged behind Evaristo's eyes.
Andre Bell stood at the counter with a folded sheet of printer paper. He was still wearing his orange sanitation vest, one reflective strip darkened by rain. Evaristo knew the shape of Andre's order without looking: coffee with too much sugar, bacon egg and cheese, a pack of peppermint gum for the bus.
