A Debt of Honey
Labor organizer Ignacy Sokol dies on the floor of Zofia Krawiec's Chicago apothecary with a coded prescription and a torn clinic bottle in his hands. Zofia knows enough about doses, labels, and delivery marks to see that neither belongs to medicine. Following their trail could cost her family the shop that keeps them alive.
On Chicago's Near West Side in 1913, every clue leads deeper: a factory clinic that erases injuries, eviction papers that arrive before frightened women can speak, and a settlement-house attic sheltering people who cannot survive public attention. Zofia joins Mara Bell, a settlement-house director who knows exposure can endanger the very people it claims to protect.
With police pressure mounting before Ignacy's inquest, Zofia must turn private records into proof without making vulnerable neighbors targets. A Debt of Honey is a tense historical mystery of medicine, labor, family loyalty, and hard-won solidarity. The papers are moving. Zofia has to make truth move faster.

The Bottle in His Hand
The old man wanted camphor for his knees and credit until Friday. Zofia measured the spirits into a brown bottle, corked it, and wrote his name in a hand small enough to leave room for the price.
"Friday," she said.
"You have a saint's heart, Miss Krawiec."
