The Borrowed Weather Vane
Caleb only meant to find a nail for his family's farm stand. Instead, on an abandoned hill above the Yakima Valley, he finds a rusted weather vane that scratches out tomorrow's local weather before it happens.
At first, the warnings feel like a gift. Caleb saves a row of peaches from hail, keeps smoke from spoiling fruit, and finally has proof that he can help when drought has made every small mistake expensive. But every private forecast gives his family an advantage someone else does not get. When a smooth-talking businessman offers to turn Caleb's knowledge into a paid service, Caleb and his science rival Naya must decide what a warning is worth.
As a hard storm bears down on the valley, the vane delivers a final message tied to a dangerous irrigation gate. Caleb can protect his own orchard, or risk being believed and help the whole neighborhood prepare. A hopeful middle-grade story of weather, friendship, and choosing fairness when certainty is scarce.

Rust on the Hill
Caleb had gone up the hill for a nail.
That was what he told Abuela Rosa when she called after him from the farm stand. One nail, from Uncle Ezra's old place, because the cardboard sign saying PEACHES had come loose again. The sign flapped in the hot wind, pointing customers toward the highway instead of the tables.
"Bring two," Abuela called. "One nail has a cousin somewhere."
