Quarterfinals for the Unready
After a severe knee injury ends sixteen-year-old Keisha Bell's solo gymnastics season, her mother enrolls her in a struggling community acrobatics program run by the father she stopped speaking to after the injury. Keisha is determined to prove her competitive worth and qualify the squad for the regional quarterfinals, but the team trains in a drafty Columbus armory with worn mats and a leaking roof.
Worse, the team's primary flyer is her younger brother, Micah, who refuses to let Keisha treat his safety like an afterthought in her personal comeback. As an elite private athletic club quietly attempts to poach their foundational base and the municipal recreation board threatens to reallocate the armory for warehouse storage, Keisha must choose between a private scholarship that saves herself or an unflashy, collaborative routine that depends entirely on trusting her teammates.
With the qualifying deadline ticking down, every lift, spot, and handoff becomes a test of shared timing and family truth. Keisha has to decide whether winning means standing alone in the spotlight or building a foundation strong enough to hold everyone up.

The neoprene sleeve on Keisha’s right knee smelled faintly of stale detergent and wintergreen rub, a reminder that her joint had its own rules now. She stood inside the double doors of the West Side Armory recreation center, letting her eyes adjust to the dusty amber wash of the high sodium lights. Outside, an August downpour had just broken over Columbus, drum-rolling against the corrugated steel roof and splashing down into four plastic mop buckets strategically spaced along the south wall.
The armory floor was a patchwork of eras. Blue tumbling mats with grey duct-tape seams abutted a faded wooden run-up track. At the far end, two portable balance beams stood like wooden sawmills beside a pyramid of chalk-dusted vinyl blocks. A small municipal athletics banner hung from the exposed iron rafters, its yellow lettering peeling at the edges: Columbus Community Recreation—Excellence in Motion.
