A Door for Every Winter
A blizzard seals Cañon Hollow, and locksmith Lena Ortiz opens a jammed school-shelter door to find a hidden room, obsolete brass lock cores, and evacuation badges meant for January.
Lena returned to this Western Colorado town after eight years away. Fire captain Eli Mercer trusts her hands but not the woman who missed his brother's funeral. As they follow old control keys through clinic stores, buried utility corridors, and courthouse records, they uncover a transfer plan designed to decide which residents receive heat, medicine, and a place to stay.
This small-town suspense novel blends winter danger with a slow-burn romantic mystery. To stop private security from emptying whole blocks before roads reopen, Lena must turn the town's forgotten emergency network into a public voice and face the people she once left behind. Every opened door raises the cost of staying silent, and every choice could decide who still has a home when morning comes.

Schoolhouse Door
By four in the afternoon, Cañon Hollow school smelled of wet wool, burnt coffee, and the hot-dust breath of a generator working too hard.
Lena Ortiz knelt beside the gym's east fire door with a flashlight between her teeth. Snow had packed itself into the threshold and melted again under a hundred boots. The door had swollen against its frame. People pressed close behind her, their shadows jumping on the cinderblock walls whenever the generator coughed.
"Can you get it?" Nina Ortega asked.
