Aleutian Blackout
November 1983. On the sub-zero volcanic outpost of Adak Island in the Aleutians, seventeen-year-old Kiska Gallagher monitors shortwave frequencies from the attic crawlway of her drafty Quonset hut. When the military's massive Cobra Dane radar drops offline during the high-stakes Able Archer 83 naval exercise, Kiska intercepts an unauthorized five-figure Morse transmission cutting through the polar static. The signal does not originate from Soviet spy trawlers lingering in the Bering Sea—it is transmitting from inside the American base perimeter.
When military police raid her father's boiler shop and uncover planted transmitting vacuum tubes, Petty Officer Thomas Gallagher faces an immediate court-martial for treason. Determined to exonerate him before he is shipped to a mainland brig, Kiska allies with Vasily Dirks, an Unangam teenager with intimate knowledge of the island's abandoned World War II subterranean steam utilidors. Together, they navigate freezing pipe shafts to document the real traitor: a high-level civilian contractor feeding classified American fleet telemetry to offshore Soviet vessels.
As a Category-3 eighty-knot williwaw blizzard slams the island and cuts off all escape, official justice collapses under bureaucratic paranoia. With time running out, Kiska must make a perilous solo climb up an ice-sheathed ninety-foot antenna mast into the raging gale to sever the rogue feed before the Cold War erupts into open catastrophe.

The filaments inside the glass envelope do not wake up all at once. They take forty seconds of battery draw to turn from dull charcoal to the specific orange-peach glow of an electric stove coil, and until they reach operating temperature, the headset gives me nothing except the sixty-cycle leak from the galvanized conduits running along the joists.
I sit on a canvas sea bag stuffed with discarded winter woolens, knees pulled against the rough wooden framing of Quonset Hut 42B’s attic crawlway. Outside, the November dusk has already flattened Sweeper Cove into slate-gray water and black volcanic rock. The williwaw hasn't hit full force yet, but the gusts coming down off Mount Moffett hit the corrugated iron roof like gravel tossed against sheet metal, rattling the washers beneath every lag bolt.
My fingers are cold. They are always cold up here. When I press my knuckles against the aluminum chassis of the receiver, the metal draws the heat straight out of my skin, leaving white pressure rings around the small, circular burns where rosin-core solder spattered across my thumbs last Tuesday. I wrap my palms around the hot glass of the 6SK7 radio-frequency amplifier tube just to steal back five seconds of circulation.
