Bone Dust and Gasoline
Seventeen-year-old Rory Navarro works the graveyard shift at an independent pet crematorium on the industrial edge of Bakersfield, loading steel retorts and driving an un-airconditioned minivan packed with memorial urns. She is used to heavy labor, but when her older brother Leo skips town after defaulting on an illicit scrap loan, predatory collector Gabe Torrance gives Rory seventy-two hours to pay forty-eight hundred dollars or forfeit her grandfather's licensed mobile clinic van and riverside kennel.
Desperate to keep a roof over her ailing grandfather's head, Rory pushes through sixty-two delivery stops across the scorched asphalt of Kern County alongside Ellis Chen, her quiet crematory shift partner. Every stop buys a few hours of borrowed peace, but the pressure mounts when Rory discovers Leo has hidden stolen copper conduit and stripped catalytic parts inside her transport crates, turning her nightly courier runs into an unwitting smuggling route.
With Torrance closing the vise and midnight fast approaching, Rory cannot afford another mistake in the California heat. Protecting what remains of her family means confronting the brother who abandoned her to burn, navigating a vicious local underworld, and deciding how much of herself she is willing to sacrifice before the fire consumes everything she loves.

Ambient Temp (Thursday 11:45 PM)
The walk-in freezer at Valley Oak Animal Clinic smells like bleach, frozen marrow, and pine disinfectant. My cowhide gloves are soaked through at the wrists from freezer condensation. When I lift the heavy vinyl pouch, the forty-pound retriever inside doesn't bend. It feels like canal ice wrapped in plastic.
I hitch the deadweight against my hip, back through the plastic curtains, and kick the steel fire door open with my boot.
