Inheritance of Smoke
A living woman's medical tag turns up in funeral director Mara Finch's crematory ash. By nightfall, Mara finds a private transfer without a death certificate and a care-home resident whose estate changed hands after an unrecorded death.
In an eastern Tennessee river town, Mara has inherited a family business built on discretion. Her uncle Cal calls that discretion mercy. But altered medication records, hidden transfers, and a sealed vault beneath the crematory point to a system that has treated vulnerable residents as property. Every ledger line can cost someone a home, a license, or a life.
With a state deadline closing in and a memorial cremation poised to erase the evidence, Mara must work beside a former friend who has every reason to distrust her. This grounded gothic suspense novella follows a woman choosing public accountability over family loyalty before more names vanish.

Tag in the Ash
The chamber had cooled enough for work but not enough to forgive carelessness. Mara Finch wore leather gloves to the elbow and pulled the rake through the gray bed in slow strokes, listening for metal. The retort gave off a dry, mineral heat that settled behind her eyes. On the other side of the wall, the arrangement room held a family drinking bad coffee beneath framed photographs of foothills they had driven past all their lives.
The morning's cremation had been Mr. Dempsey, eighty-three, with a permit signed, an identification disc checked twice, and three sons who wanted the urn before supper. Nothing had gone wrong. That was usually when Mara's shoulders started to loosen.
The rake struck something with a bright, hard click.
