A Door for the Wind

By CODY SPURRIER· [email protected]

Every door in Nessa Vale's St. Paul apartment building opens onto the same windy meadow after sunset. The first time twelve-year-old Nessa sees the impossible place, her missing father is standing in the grass, reaching for her before the wind pulls him away.

Nessa has always trusted routines more than rumors. But the meadow is changing. Doors are disappearing one by one, and each threshold leads to a promise someone in the building has avoided keeping. With Theo, a younger neighbor who carries a flashlight and asks inconveniently useful questions, Nessa must learn the rules of a world shaped by silence.

Finding her father will mean confronting the truth Gran Mae has hidden, the choices Eli made before he entered the meadow, and the building's shared history of leaving hard things unsaid. The wind can imitate any trusted voice, but it cannot withstand a truth spoken together. To bring Eli home, Nessa must decide whether she needs every answer or whether an honest next step is enough.

The laundry room door was supposed to stick in damp weather.

Nessa knew this because she had been the person who stuck a folded bus schedule into the hinge three winters ago, when Mr. Alvarez said he would fix it and then got called upstairs to deal with a radiator that had begun spraying water like a tiny, furious fountain.

The schedule was gone now. The door still dragged against the floor.
