The Girl Who Grew a Compass

By CONGOTCO PHELPS· [email protected]

On the morning after moving into her grandmother's Philadelphia row house, twelve-year-old Sol finds a warm brass point beneath her palm. It turns whenever she walks near the locked community garden at the end of the block, as if her skin has grown a direction of its own.

With Amir, a practical neighbor who carries tape, a flashlight, and strong opinions, Sol follows the compass through mural alleys, rooftop gardens, and the shadow of the elevated train. The trail leads to Aunt Nia's hidden notebook, a buried boundary, and a promise about the garden that Sol's family has spent years avoiding. Now a development plan threatens to erase the place before Sol can understand what happened.

Sol must choose between keeping her grandmother's silence safe and bringing the truth into the open. The compass can point toward the evidence, but it cannot decide what she owes the people she loves. Warm, mysterious, and full of neighborhood texture, this middle-grade adventure asks whether direction is something we inherit or something we choose.

The Thing Under Sol's Skin

Sol woke because something in her left palm was warm.

Not hot. Not burning. Warm in the particular way a spoon became warm when it sat in a cup of tea, as if the heat had a small job and intended to finish it.
