A Tournament of Tiny Giants

By CRISTINA HALL· [email protected]

Thirteen-year-old Owen Kade knows every rule, tournament counter, and tactical opening in the strategy board game Tiny Giants. When his family's neighborhood game cafe in Minneapolis receives a forty-eight-hour eviction notice over soaring commercial rent, the national championship tournament at the historic Great Northern Depot becomes their only lifeline. Armed with his grandfather's vintage set, Owen enters the high-stakes bracket determined to claim the five-thousand-dollar top prize and rescue the business.

Everything shifts when his ten-year-old sister Maya discovers an unwritten movement gap in the official rulebook that seasoned masters have overlooked for years. Slipping through the game's blind spot delivers shocking early victories, but taking sole credit pushes Maya away and draws fierce scrutiny from the reigning national champion and corporate publishers. As threats of disqualification loom and match clocks tick down, Owen must choose between winning at all costs or standing up for fair play and family trust.

The autumn sun came through the front glass of The Roll and Reach Game Cafe, laying long amber squares across the linoleum floor. Owen stood at the retail counter with a clean microfiber cloth, wiping the laminate tournament mats until every hex and perimeter grid reflected the fluorescent tubes above. He was thirteen, disciplined with inventory, and proud that his grandfather trusted him with the full opening checklist.

Behind the half-drawn curtain of the back office, the espresso machine hissed, followed by the dry tear of certified mail paper.

"Forty-eight hours is not a grace period, Arthur," his mother, Nina, said in a hushed, strained voice. "It is an eviction ultimatum. Five thousand dollars in back rent by Thursday morning, or the management company changes the deadbolts."
