Against the Current
When dead fish clog the intake screen of Mara Ledoux's towboat, she knows the Mississippi is carrying more than drought and silt. Intake
By sunrise the river had lost its color.
It ran beneath the Larkspur like poured tin, flat in the wide places and black where the current found a seam. Mara stood in the wheelhouse with one hand loose around the throttle, watching a sandbar rise out of the Arkansas bank where last spring there had been six feet of water and a fisherman who sold catfish from a blue cooler.
"Mara," Tessa said. "You need to come down."
