A School for Stray Signals

By DANA RIVERA· [email protected]

Ten-year-old Suri Kline builds a homemade translator that turns animal warning calls into human words. Her first clear message comes from Piper, a shelter cat: not safe here.

At the same time, the county shelter is facing a closure vote. Suri believes the strange little machine can help prove the shelter matters, one useful signal at a time. But the translator does more than point to loose latches and empty water bowls. It catches private fears, overlapping distress, and echoes from places where sound refuses to stay put. The more Suri tries to gather decisive evidence, the harder it becomes to tell the difference between hearing and having permission to share.

With sharp-minded classmate Mina, practical older brother Ben, and a team of shelter volunteers, Suri must build a plan that can survive a real county meeting. Saving the shelter may depend on the loudest recording she has, or on her courage to keep it private. The clock is moving, and every signal asks what kind of help is truly helpful.

The red light on Suri Kline's machine blinked only when something was wrong.

Unfortunately, it had been blinking for eleven minutes.

“That is not a feature,” Mina Alvarez said from the other side of the makerspace table.
