A Crown for the Unchosen

By EFRAIN ROMERO· [email protected]

Seventeen-year-old Nessa has spent years repairing the palace garments no one looks closely enough to question. Then, during Vey’s succession ritual, the sacred crown rejects the royal heir and chooses her instead. Before Nessa can understand what happened, the court turns her into proof of a convenient bloodline and sends her toward a border treaty that may be a second coronation in disguise.

Forced onto the flooded roads with Soren, the disgraced heir whose future she took, Nessa follows hidden stitches through toll bridges, provincial archives, and memories that no longer agree. The crown does not reveal destiny. It edits dissent, teaching rulers to forget every moment they might have resisted.

With the treaty hall waiting and the binding advancing, Nessa must decide whether peace is worth surrendering her mind. To expose the truth, she will need Soren’s trust without letting him choose for her, and the courage to be witnessed without becoming anyone’s possession.

The ceremonial chair had split its seam at the worst possible moment.

Nessa saw it from beneath the succession dais, where the palace carpet smelled of dust, wax, and the damp stone beneath the floor. A black thread had pulled free along the chair's front edge, making a crooked mouth in the silver cloth. Above it, the royal musicians lifted their instruments. The herald raised both hands.

No one else had noticed.
