A House for Unfinished Weddings

By ELIZABETH ESPENBERG· [email protected]

When wedding planner Mara Ellery inherits Bellwether House, a historic Vermont venue, she expects an asset she can repair, sell, and finally leave behind. Instead, she receives a leaking house, a season of impossible bookings, and forty-two days to keep every promised event running before an estate sale closes.

The work becomes more complicated when Mara's ex-wife, Jo Marchand, arrives as the contractor responsible for the repairs. Around them, couples bring hired family stand-ins, polished public stories, financial fears, and new definitions of commitment. Each wedding exposes another cost hidden inside Bellwether's promise of effortless beauty, while a luxury developer prepares to turn the working venue into an exclusive resort.

Warm, sharp, and bittersweet, this contemporary ensemble novel follows one woman as she learns that competence cannot substitute for honesty, and that saving a beloved place may require giving up control. With the final wedding approaching and the sale threatening the people who depend on the house, Mara must decide what kind of future everyone is actually willing to build.

Read a little

At 7:12 on the morning Mara Ellery inherited Bellwether House, water came through the ceiling above the service refrigerator and landed in the pan where Aunt Maris had once kept peaches.

Mara stood in the kitchen doorway with her overnight bag still in one hand. The house had been empty for three weeks, according to the realtor's lockbox report, which meant either the house had developed a schedule of its own or Maris had left someone behind to keep it interesting.

The drip hit metal. Drip. Drip. Drip.
