Borrowed Light
Mara Rourke knows how to make a room glow. Saving the aging South Kensington cinema her father left behind is another kind of problem entirely.
When a failed fire-insurance inspection puts the Cinema on a ninety-day clock, Mara is offered a clean way out by the developer buying up the block. The price would settle the debts, silence the rumors, and turn a beloved neighborhood theater into somebody else's future.
Eli Mercer, the Cinema's former projectionist, suspects the inspection was never an accident. He knows the building's hidden systems, its missing records, and the cost of trusting a promise too late. Working beside him means Mara must face the messy inheritance her father left behind and the fact that competence is not the same as carrying everything alone.
As evidence gathers and the reopening approaches, Mara and Eli have one chance to turn a screening into proof. But saving the Cinema may require more than exposing a scheme. It may require giving the place away, piece by difficult piece, to the people willing to keep its lights on.

The house lights failed in the middle of their dim.
Mara Rourke stood under the balcony with one hand on the lighting tablet and watched the east bank stay hard white while the rest of the auditorium softened to amber. The stubborn fixtures threw a flat glare across rows of cracked red seats. Dust showed in it. So did every old gum stain, every place the carpet had been repaired with a square cut from somewhere less visible.
"Again," called Theo from the lobby.
