A Crown of Salt
When forty-five-year-old catastrophe insurance adjuster Mara Vale returns to her Massachusetts hometown to liquidate her late mother’s crumbling coastal boardinghouse, she expects to calculate structural depreciation and close probate quickly. Instead, a confrontation over missing estate funds triggers an impossible surge of freezing Atlantic brine into the dry basement, exposing an uncanny mechanism: the house’s foundation floods whenever someone in the family denies the truth.
As a major nor'easter bears down on the North Shore, Mara uncovers four decades of hidden municipal logs detailing an unrecorded 1851 pact. The town selectmen granted the family parcel tax immunity in exchange for maintaining subterranean intake flumes that quietly drew catastrophic storm surge into the cellar, shielding wealthy upland estates by exporting danger downward onto working-class harbor tenants.
Partnering with an uncompromising local marine engineer and confronting her estranged brother’s buried sacrifices, Mara must abandon the safety of corporate detachment. To prevent the town from approving a discriminatory seawall that will permanently submerge the lower ward, she must risk public ruin, unseal the foundation sluices, and force the community to share the sea.

The highway off Route 127 had unspooled between stands of stunted pitch pine and the low, gray expanse of the marsh before Mara Vale let herself ease off the accelerator. The rental sedan smelled of stale disinfectant and scorched brake dust. In the passenger seat lay her aluminum clipboard, a dual-probe digital moisture meter, a steel laser measure, and two yellow field notebooks filled with loss codes from three weeks of windstorm assessments in Rhode Island.
She had spent fifteen years turning physical destruction into manageable arithmetic. When a roof failed or a storm surge punched through a sill plate, her job was neither grief nor anger; it was the steady calibration of replacement cost against policy exclusions.
