The probate packet arrived on a Tuesday with a red sticker that said IMPORTANT in the tone of a person who had never opened an envelope.
Mara Keane set it beside her coffee and finished the claim report she had been writing about a burst pipe in a ranch house outside Cheektowaga. The report required three photographs, the plumber's invoice, and a sentence explaining why water that had entered through a ceiling was not, in fact, a wind event. She could do this kind of work with half her attention. Damage became manageable when it had a category.
Diane Mercer's letter said Ruth Bell had died in November, quietly and without immediate family. Mara had known Ruth for seven years as a client who never submitted a claim without first making a color-coded folder. She had not known Ruth well enough to be named in a will. That fact sat in the room like an unpaid bill.
