A Door in the Old Mill

By JESSALYN SANDERLIN· [email protected]

The door in June's grandfather's old mill opens when someone tells a lie.

Every time it does, it gives back something lost: a brass pencil sharpener that belonged to June's mother, a flood marker, a work glove with a name stitched inside. Each object brings a broken piece of a story nobody in June's family wants to tell.

As rain swells the North Carolina creek and the town's heritage festival fills the mill yard, June and her sharp-tongued cousin Tasha follow the clues toward a locked chamber beneath the waterwheel. June wants one clear answer about why her mother left and why Grandfather Eli keeps shutting every question away. But the mill feeds on blame, and its final door offers a dangerous kind of certainty.

To save the mill and the people she loves, June must decide whether truth is something one person can hold alone.

A short preview from A Door in the Old Mill.

Read a little

The mill had a roof like a bent hat and windows that watched the creek.

June decided this before Grandfather Eli finished carrying the second box up the outside stairs. He did not say the roof was bent. He said, "Mind that step," and, "Don't lean on the rail," and, "Your room is the one with the green door."

The green door stuck when June pushed it. Her room smelled like rain-soaked boards and something powdery. Flour, maybe. A narrow bed waited beneath a window. From there she could see the waterwheel below, black and still in its wooden channel.
