A Manual for Falling
June Bell thought the worst part of a climbing accident would be recovery: the brace, the rehab bands, the missed buses, and the strangers who decide they know what her body means. Then an outdoor brand posts footage of her therapy and turns her into the smiling face of a safety campaign she never approved.
Sixteen-year-old June wants the reel gone. Instead, every attempt to take back control makes her more visible. Her rough video posts draw attention at school, strain an already damaged friendship with Maya, and expose a hospital-era consent form her mother signed while terrified and out of options. When the brand offers money and a cleaner version of June's story, saying no could cost access for other athletes too.
Set in Boulder, Colorado, A Manual for Falling is a sharp, hopeful YA novel about disability, friendship, family, and who gets to own a story. June is done being useful. Now she has to decide what it will cost to be heard.

The Version With Music
June had learned not to open videos with sound in public. People liked to put swelling music under bodies that hurt.
She was in her room anyway, brace unbuckled but still wrapped around her knee like it had its own opinion, when Ruth sent the link with three skull emojis and a message that said, is this you???
The first frame was June's hand on a blue rehab band. Someone had shot it close enough to make her fingers look brave instead of cramped. Then came her face, angled toward a physical therapist she did not remember talking to. Sunlight had been added where there had been fluorescent panels. Her uneven breathing disappeared under guitar chords.
