A Match for the Unready

On a televised junior-tennis point in Phoenix, sixteen-year-old Ren freezes. By the next week, she has lost her elite doubles spot to Casey, the teammate she has blamed for an old defeat. Then the public courts where both girls learned to play receive a closure notice. With thirty days to prove the courts matter, Ren and Casey are forced into a fundraiser exhibition under the eyes of the academy that wants to control the facility. Every practice asks them to choose between the safe version of the story and the true one: who was blamed, who stayed silent, and who gets to decide what opportunity costs. As rumors spread and the heat rises, Ren must learn that control cannot protect her from fear.
