The Garden Design

By Josh A Rebber· [email protected]

Who gets remembered as a genius?

When a celebrated modernist garden is bulldozed in defiance of a preservation order, landscape historian Priya Raman traces its surviving geometry through irrigation systems, plant stock, and contractor records.

What begins as a fight over a ruined site becomes a battle over authorship, labor, and the people whose work was erased from the story of desert architecture.

Dust at Dawn

The gate at Larkspur Garden stood open by six inches, enough for a person to slip through sideways and enough for the desert wind to push grit across the driveway in pale threads.

Beyond it, the garden was gone. The machines had reduced the site to a rough field of broken aggregate, uprooted agave, and open trenches.

Priya put both hands around the steering wheel. The leather was already warm. A man in a reflective vest came from behind a skid steer. 'Ma'am, you can't come in.'
