A House Made of Sundays

By KATHERINE CHRISTIAN· [email protected]

At dawn in a Federal Hill bakery, Mara Bell learns a developer has bought her loan and wants her building by Sunday night.\n\nHer late mother left more than recipes. Mara and her younger sister Nina uncover notebooks, parish records, and evidence that Rosalie took money after a fire displaced families, then used it to feed, shelter, and move people who could not safely be named. Former kitchen worker Lucia knows the cost of turning that history public.\n\nSet amid winter ovens, church basements, and a tense Providence zoning hearing, A House Made of Sundays is an upmarket family drama with a suspense spine about debt, inheritance, shared power, fragile family loyalties, and hard-won consent. With foreclosure looming, Mara must decide what can be proved, what must stay protected, and whether a bakery can survive without repeating the control that built it.

At four forty-seven, the ovens made the only honest noise in Bell & Daughters.

Mara Bell stood at the long steel bench with both palms in dough, folding it toward itself until the surface tightened. The bakery windows were black. Beyond them, Atwells Avenue held a strip of snow against the curb and a blue city bus sighed through the intersection without stopping. Inside, flour dust had settled on the register, the pastry case, the framed photograph of Rosalie holding a braided loaf against her hip as if bread had weight worth showing off.

The first batch of Sunday bread needed twenty more minutes. Mara checked the proofing rack, checked the thermostat, checked the electric meter through the little side window above the sink. She had checked it twice already.
