The ride was supposed to come at four-ten.
By four-twenty, I had checked the window twelve times and texted the dispatch number twice. At four-thirty, I was standing in the wet strip of lawn beside our driveway with my portfolio tube under one arm and my phone pressed to my ear, listening to a recording tell me that my call mattered.
The van had not come. That was bad enough. The line operator had the particular calm voice of someone who had spent all day being yelled at by people whose days had tipped sideways.
