A Map of Salt and Smoke
In the fog-drenched spring of 1942, seventeen-year-old Ana Morales works the packing lines of Monterey Bay, translating foremen's orders and keeping the peace. When county contractors mark her family's shoreline home with red chalk for emergency wartime demolition, Ana discovers a seawater-stained 1918 land-use charter sewn inside her late grandfather's canvas sea jacket. The agreement proves the harbor shelf was granted in perpetuity to the Mexican and Filipino fishing families who built the stone breakwater. But with the municipal registry blank, the paper alone will not stop the bulldozers.
To reach the county archive before the clearance deadline, Ana must form a reluctant alliance with Mei Santos, the sharp-eyed daughter of a family long blamed for an earlier strike betrayal. Navigating freight trains, military checkpoints, and institutional gatekeeping, the two girls uncover decades of calculated administrative erasure. As mutual suspicion turns into fierce solidarity and deep affection, Ana discovers that saving the waterfront means confronting painful family compromises and uniting thirty-two households for a public confrontation.
A Map of Salt and Smoke is a gripping, emotionally intelligent young adult historical adventure about documentary truth, collective courage, and the price of defending ancestral ground.

Marked House, Hidden Proof
The dawn shift at the Monterey canning line always tasted of diesel oil, boiled brine, and cold iron. Ana Morales wiped the scales of Pacific sardine from the cuffs of her canvas apron and stepped down from the loading dock onto the packed gravel of Ocean View Avenue. A thick blanket of marine fog drifted off the bay, wrapping the wooden pilings of the packing houses in grey damp. At seventeen, her hands were already accustomed to the fast rhythm of the packing floor—tallying tin weights, translating the foreman's orders from English into Spanish for the cutting crews, and keeping the ledger straight before the morning whistle blew.
As she turned down the narrow alley toward the cluster of salt-bleached shacks where her family lived, she heard the harsh scrape of iron against wood. Two men in dark wool jackets and heavy boots were standing at the edge of the Morales front gate. One held a surveyor's measuring chain, while the other dragged a stick of bright red lumber chalk across the cedar gatepost.
