The gate had a new padlock on it, bright brass against the sun-bleached chain.
Everything else at Drywash Gate looked old enough to have forgotten who put it there: two crooked steel posts, a cattle guard full of bottle caps, the low wash beyond it drawn white by heat. The course map said the service road continued another six miles before it bent north toward Red Table. My thumb traced that line through the plastic sleeve.
