Under the Stadium, the River

When a waterlogged school trophy shows fifteen-year-old Amaya Torres her apartment building underwater, she assumes the image is a trick of damaged metal. Then a second artifact reveals a hidden corridor beneath St. Louis, close to a new underground flood-storage project being built beside the stadium. Amaya works at the River Museum and teaches children to swim. She knows how to test evidence, but every answer pulls her deeper into a choice with no painless side. The project promises universal protection while its maps quietly move runoff toward the neighborhood where Amaya lives. Her best friend, Talia, depends on a scholarship funded by the project. Her father, Mateo, works on the construction crew and knows the danger of speaking before the paychecks are secure. As a storm deadline closes in, Amaya must decide what the artifacts are asking her to do. The future is not a prophecy, and exposing the truth will not save everyone. It may, however, force a city to admit who has been asked to carry its risk.
