The Auction of Lost Days
When Cleveland puts a dead woman's storage unit on the auction block, former municipal auctioneer Marla Vane recognizes the language of a civilized theft. The city's private contractor has bundled diaries, medical records, family photographs, and neighborhood files under harmless-sounding labels, then scheduled them for sale before anyone can object. One of the units belongs to Marla's late sister, Helen, making the damage personal before Marla understands how wide it runs. With seventy-two hours left, Marla recruits her estranged niece Nina, a public-records lawyer, a warehouse driver, and a neighborhood trust organizer. They cannot quietly rescue one box without abandoning hundreds of others. Their only chance is to turn the live auction into a public custody challenge, using the city's own bid rules to make hidden transfers impossible to ignore. This dry, high-pressure civic caper runs on legal leverage, warehouse logistics, and family friction. As the contractor tightens control and the clock runs down, Marla must decide whether procedure can still mean responsibility when the people running it have learned how to make harm look orderly.
