The Relay of Other People
When a rail-dispatch trainer discovers that an automated evacuation system has erased whole communities from its first-alert map, Mara Vale expects a technical correction and a difficult meeting. Instead, wildfire smoke, a derailed freight train, and a narrowing river corridor turn the audit into a live rescue. Juniper Flats, Pine Knot siding, and Alder Court are occupied places with real roads, neighbors, children, and fragile ways out, but the system ranks them as uncertain because their records are harder to verify. Mara has no command authority, only the ability to read the gap between a screen and the ground. With a volunteer firefighter, a school transportation coordinator, a tribal emergency liaison, and residents who have learned to rely on one another, she builds a manual relay across radios, buses, fire halls, and front doors. The contractor wants the error contained. The railroad wants its schedule preserved. The smoke keeps moving. To get people out, Mara must decide how much uncertainty she can carry before waiting becomes another form of harm.
