The Shape of a Rival
Six weeks before a major Chicago museum opens its exhibition on women erased from American architecture, Mira Adler finds an old drawing in the consultant packet. The museum credits it to her younger sister, Talia Mercer, a celebrated architect whose career was built on the language of borrowed ideas. Mira has spent years designing the rooms where other people receive recognition. Now the exhibition depends on Talia's name, donor confidence, and a polished story about collaboration. As Mira follows the drawing back to an abandoned library competition, she discovers that the theft was known by her family and quietly managed by the institution that wants her permanent loyalty. With installation week closing in, Mira must decide whether professional security is worth allowing the public record to remain false. The Shape of a Rival is an emotionally layered contemporary family novel about authorship, ambition, museum labor, and the cost of confusing silence with dignity.
