The Shape of a Second Life

Nine weeks after a stroke changes her speech and balance, Mara Ellison returns to the Denver documentary studio she founded and finds a trailer built from her rehabilitation footage. The broadcaster calls it a story of resilience. Mara recognizes something else: her private recovery has been turned into a business asset, and her former partner, Rafe Calder, is using the campaign to justify decisions made while she was hospitalized.

With a contract deadline closing in, Mara must read the paper trail, test the limits of her own stamina, and decide what kind of help she can accept without surrendering authority. Her son wants to protect her. Her former colleague Nina insists on accuracy over mythology. Lucia Ortega, a neighborhood organizer, reminds Mara that the studio's work belongs to real communities, not just the people who know how to sell it.
