Seventeen Ways to Fall
Inside The Crag, a converted warehouse climbing gym in Salt Lake City, sixteen-year-old Cora Lin lives by precision and control. As captain of her competition climbing team, she calculates every hold and clip to keep her squad safe and in contention for a funded bid to the national championships. But when a regional corporate sponsor installs live-streaming rigs in the gym, the focus rapidly shifts from technical excellence to sensationalized spectacle.
The pressure turns dangerous when the sponsor demands risky routes for online views, leading to an uncontrolled fall that injures a younger teammate. When Cora uncovers a secret agreement requiring unedited broadcasts of athlete panic without parental consent, she realizes their coach is selling teen distress for corporate bonuses. With regional finals approaching, Cora must ally with her former rival Amaya and choose between securing a championship trophy and taking a public stand.
Seventeen Ways to Fall is an emotionally intense contemporary Young Adult sports novel about trust, athletic autonomy, and institutional accountability. Set against the competitive climbing circuit of the Wasatch Front, it explores the courage needed to challenge an exploitative system.

The air inside The Crag was always coldest at six in the morning, smelling of concrete dust, dried magnesium carbonate, and the faint metallic tang of aluminum carabiners. Cora Lin clicked her torque wrench into the bolt head of an emerald-green pinch hold on the forty-five-degree bouldering wall. She pulled the ratchet handle until the tool gave its muted, mechanical snap. Thirty-five foot-pounds. Exact.
She stepped back onto the high-density rubber crumb flooring, rolling a strip of white athletic tape between her thumb and forefinger. Her skin was thick and stained with chalk, calluses smoothed down with fine pumice every Sunday night so they would not catch or tear on sandpaper-coarse micro-crimps. In her leather-bound notebook, propped against a chalk bucket on the bench, she had already mapped the movement sequence for the morning's junior team simulation: nine distinct body placements, five counter-balance tension shifts, and three resting stances where a climber could breathe steadily without flooding their forearms with lactic acid.
To Cora, climbing was not an emotional performance. It was arithmetic. Gravity was constant at 9.8 meters per second squared, rubber friction on fiberglass resin was quantifiable, and fear was merely a physiological misfire indicating an unread sequence. If you calculated every angle of leverage before your shoe rubber ever left the staging mat, the wall could never surprise you.
