A Good Place to Be Late

By LAWRENCE HARRIS· [email protected]

Mara Mercer comes home to Bellwether, Ohio, intending to help her father through the next difficult season. Instead, a canceled bus route strands hospital workers and pulls Mara into a six-month redesign of the town's transit system. The person best equipped to help is Elias Hart, the municipal operations manager, and Mara's ex-husband.

As they ride broken routes before dawn and listen to workers explain what a missed connection costs, their old partnership begins to work again. So does the attraction they thought they had buried. But a polished development coalition is pushing a donor-friendly riverfront loop, and the plan's success depends on choices that cannot be softened into civic language.

When Mara discovers that Elias once opposed the loop but kept his vote quiet to protect his career, the past becomes part of the public record. To save the routes that matter, they must choose honesty over convenience and decide whether a damaged relationship can be rebuilt without pretending it never broke.

Mara Mercer arrived at her father's house with a pharmacy bag on the passenger seat and no useful explanation for why the front door was standing open.

She stopped in the driveway. The river wind pushed a receipt along the cracked concrete and lifted the edge of a paper notice taped to the porch rail. For a second she was back in Columbus, where an open door meant a neighbor, a landlord, or a situation already beyond the point where a phone call could help. Bellwether had never been good at keeping emergencies in their proper categories.

She took the stairs two at a time.
