Cavity Seal
In Portsmouth, Ohio, George Ramos has spent nearly four decades running Ramos & Sons Mortuary, quietly absorbing the burial costs of bankrupt mill hands and grieving neighbors rather than consigning them to potter's field. Now, seventy-two hours before a predatory private-equity firm executes a tax-lien foreclosure on the historic Chillicothe Street building, George’s lifelong refusal to collect on his charity brings the family firm to the brink of ruin.
When his estranged daughter, Sarah, returns from Columbus as a battle-hardened insolvency paralegal, she finds the Victorian funeral home decaying and her father’s finances crippled by an unrecorded shadow ledger. Desperate to stop the sheriff's gavel before Monday noon, Sarah scours damp coal-bunker vaults for forgotten accounts receivable, unearthing decades of local sorrow, unpaid funeral notes, and a forgotten covenant signed by the very dynasty threatening to seize the mortuary.
With winter river fog rising off the Ohio and auction notices posted at the county courthouse, father and daughter must bridge years of silence to wage a high-stakes legal and moral counter-offensive. In a town gutted by industrial flight, saving the mortuary means deciding what a community owes to the man who buried its dead.

Case 24-108: Preliminary Disinfection (Hour 84: Thursday, 11:00 PM)
The boiler in the sub-cellar took its steam with a dull, rhythmic hammer that vibrated up through the soles of George Ramos’s oil-resistant boots. Every twenty seconds the iron check-valve clicked, seated, and groaned against forty pounds of head pressure, sending a dry shiver through the whitewashed limestone walls. Outside, where the alley sloped downward toward the Scioto River floodwall, early December sleet struck the high, barred basement windows like thrown gravel. The glass was frosted opaque at the sashes, rimed with soot from the railroad switching yard three blocks east.
George worked a stubby flathead screwdriver under the calcified collar of the hydro-aspirator. The lime had bloomed into a chalky crust around the brass nozzle, fed by forty years of hard municipal water drawn from the Ohio River aquifer. He tapped the wooden handle with the heel of his palm. A flake sheared away, exposing the dulled metal beneath, followed by a pinch of pale grit that rattled into the sink basin.
