A Lantern for the Last Whale
During a foggy beach cleanup on the Oregon Coast, ten-year-old Suri hears a whale answer the paired flashes of an old buoy lantern. The whale keeps returning to the same restricted inlet, but Suri cannot yet tell whether she has found a real pattern or only a coincidence shaped by fog and hope.
When a storm threatens the coast, Suri brings her notes to her fourteen-year-old cousin Nico, a drone-capable partner, and the adults who manage the harbor. A distant drone view reveals a calf trapped beyond a temporary barrier, turning a strange observation into a race against tide, weather, and a salvage schedule. Suri must learn to describe what she knows without claiming what she cannot prove.
With the safe channel narrowing and a family of whales on opposite sides of moving water, the rescue will require patience, evidence, and teamwork. Suri cannot command the sea, but she can help the right people act at the right minute.

The beach cleanup began with a gull stealing half a granola bar.
It swooped between the driftwood logs, snatched the bar from a paper plate, and landed on the roof of the equipment trailer with the wrapper hanging from its beak. Tess pointed at it with her grabber.
“That is not marine debris,” she announced.
