A Knife for Every Season
Railroad baron Silas Wren collapses at a private hunting supper, and traveling butcher Ada Pike finds blood on her carving knife and bitter resin in the fat. The meal came from her kitchen. In a snowbound Montana lodge, men with money and titles are ready to make her the easiest answer.
Ada follows the poisoned pepper packet through delayed freight, black-wax seals, and old deeds that decide who eats through spring. Saving Silas may be the only way to keep him alive long enough to restore access to Coldwater Valley, where Ada's father died after eviction.
Silas's estranged son offers access but carries his own guilt. With a railroad attorney turning hunger into leverage, Ada must clear her name and set a trap at the one table where power still believes it is safe. Historical crime with romantic-suspense pressure, hard winter stakes, and trust earned through work.

Ada Pike had the venison hanging from a hook by its hock and the first guest still outside stamping snow from his boots when Thomas Wren told her she was cutting it wrong.
She did not look up. The forequarter lay open under her knife, clean as a map. “Then you may take hold of it.”
He stood in the doorway of the lodge kitchen, too well dressed for a room that smelled of wet wool, marrow, and onions browned in bacon fat. Snow clung to the shoulders of his black coat. His gloves were tucked beneath one arm as though he had never needed both hands at once.
