When marine-insurance adjuster Nora Voss finds a claim photograph showing a clean rectangular absence behind the boilers of a decommissioned Maine ferry, she knows the vessel holds more than rust and old debt. An elegant art broker knows it too, and his offer to buy whatever Nora's late father hid comes with a deadline tied to the tide. To reach the secret before the ferry is cut apart, Nora turns to the sisters she has spent years keeping at a professional distance: Elena, who stayed to carry the family bills, and June, whose debt has made every promise sound like a trap. Their search uncovers a painting with a violent history, a harbor deal built on silence, and proof that private rescue may be another name for theft. As a storm closes the water and the broker moves to take control, the sisters must decide what their family is owed, what it owes in return, and whether the truth can survive being brought into the open.

The photograph had been taken for an insurance file, which meant it had no business being beautiful.
Nora Voss had spent twenty-seven years learning to distrust beauty in claim records. A photograph could make a split rail look like weather and a rotten bulkhead look like bad luck. This one showed the engine room of the Bluewater in flat black and white: boilers, pipe runs, a tangle of gauges, and, behind the port boiler shield, a rectangle cleaner than everything around it.
