Eleven-year-old Nola Voss knows the coastal marsh behind her New Jersey town by its tide lines, bird calls, and changing paths. So when a tired swallow with a blue thread tied to its leg band taps four beats at her window, she follows the signal to a locked gate beneath the highway. Behind it lies a neglected wildlife passage, and construction crews are preparing to seal the route before spring migration peaks. With talkative clinic volunteer Mina, cautious Grandpa Ray, and wildlife veterinarian Dr. Singh, Nola must turn careful observations into evidence and build a safe temporary corridor before the flock arrives. The project manager is not cruel, only bound to deadlines, permits, and safety rules, which makes every minute matter. Warm, grounded, and full of marshland wonder, this juvenile rescue adventure follows one child learning that protecting a living thing does not mean keeping it close. Sometimes the bravest choice is making room for it to leave.
