A Crown of Borrowed Feathers

By REBECCA WILLIAMS· [email protected]

At sixteen, Mara expects her ceremonial feather to assign her a trade and a future. Instead, it stays blank. Then she touches a forbidden black feather and hears the missing heir's last memory: the royal treaty route is designed to start a war.

When the palace imprisons Mara's mother, Mara is forced to impersonate the vanished heir aboard an airborne convoy bound for the mountain city of Aster. Each borrowed talent helps her survive the journey, but each one also carries someone else's fear, skill, or memory. As storms close around the convoy, Mara, a runaway apprentice, and a palace guard uncover a quieter threat beneath the ceremony: a ministry that has spent generations harvesting citizens' gifts and rewriting the lives left behind.

To save her mother, Mara must decide what she is willing to lose, then turn the crown's own bridges, bells, and archive against it. The route to freedom will demand more than a perfect disguise. It will demand a public choice about who gets to say what a person is.

The morning Mara turned sixteen, the dye house smelled of hot iron and rain.

Water ticked from the roof into a bucket by the door. In the vats, indigo took the color of a bruise before it took the color of a night sky. Mara stirred the blue with a cedar paddle and watched the surface settle around her reflection.

“You are stirring like you expect it to confess,” Mother Tessa said.
